Can you imagine if your name simply defined you as "not something else"?
That would just be so sad!
Here's a photographic "shout out" to all the California mushrooms I've come across that are titled "False *Somethings"; specifically: the False Chanterelle, two species of False Morel, and the False Turkey Tail.
False Chanterelle
(Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca)
Mendocino, California (October 2023)
False Morel
(Verpa bohemica)
Morgan Hill, California (April 2023)
False Morel
(Verpa conica)
Hayward, California (February 2016)
False Turkey Tail
(Stereum hirsutum)
Multiple East San Francisco Bay Area locations, California (Jan.-March 2015-2017)
I sure think they deserve names all their own, don't you?! At least the "False Turkey Tail" also goes by "Hairy Curtain Crust"--now THAT is a name to write home about!
What is your favorite "false" mushroom?
What kind of "false" mushrooms grow where you live?
